By now everyone knows that due to Coronavirus there will be no Whit Friday walks or contests in 2020
Hail Smiling Morn.
Not to be put off, Delph Band have created this insight into our great tradition.
As we are unable to have the usual outdoor service on the morning of Whit Friday due to the curtailment of outdoor worship, there will be a service streamed from the Church of England in Saddleworth website at 11.00 am on Whit Friday morning. There will be brass music, traditional hymns, prayers, readings, reflections, video clips and pictures of past Whit Fridays from all the Saddleworth churches who take part in Whit Friday walks of witness. This service will remain on the website for some time so if you are not able to visit on Whit Friday morning, there is no need to miss this celebration.
If the words of the traditional introduction to Whit Friday ‘Hail Smiling Morn’ remain a mystery to you, there will be the opportunity to hear it sung by the choir of Saddleworth Musical Society in a Zoom production available on their website from early on Whit Friday throughout the day. Maintaining a wonderful tradition in these strange times!

The suggestion that members of the community should play instruments or sing on the day is totally unrelated to this organisation or to the Saddleworth and Oldham Group of Contests. Please remember that if you do wish to play or sing, this should be within the confines of your own garden or surrounding area of your home and social distancing should be observed, unless of course Government guidelines change during the run up to June 5th
